The story behind the legend
Once upon a time...
Georges Guynemer was one of the most famous French aviators of World War I. Born in 1894, he joined the military aviation service in 1915 after several rejections due to his fragile health. He quickly demonstrated exceptional courage and remarkable talent at the controls of his plane, becoming a symbol of the chivalrous and daring pilot. His favorite plane, the SPAD VII “Vieux Charles,” became almost as legendary as he was.
Over the course of the war, Guynemer racked up 53 confirmed aerial victories, although some accounts suggest he had more. He was known for his recklessness, often willing to take on opponents who outnumbered or outgunned him. His spirit of bravery and perfectionism inspired many young pilots, and he helped to enhance the prestige of the Cigognes squadron, to which he belonged.
Guynemer disappeared on a mission on September 11, 1917, over Poelkapelle, Belgium, at the age of 22. His body was never found, which helped forge the legend of the hero lost in the skies. He still embodies the ideal of the courageous fighter and the nascent French aviation, a symbol of surpassing oneself and sacrifice for one's country.
