The story behind the legend

Once upon a time...

The Skyraider was designed to replace the SBD Dauntless at the end of World War II, but it arrived too late to participate.

The project was conceived in 1944, but it was not until 1945 that the aircraft saw the light of day. Originally it was to be called Dauntless II, but in February 1946 it was renamed Skyraider.

The name AD-1 comes from the fact that it was the first Douglas Attack aircraft.

The AD-2 came out in 1948 with modifications to the landing gear, cockpit and wing reinforcements.

In 1950 the AD-3 appeared with new modifications, notably on the propellers and in the cockpit.

Then the AD-4 version came out, it is the most built version, equipped with the new Wright engine, the R3350-26WA, more reliable and less greedy, the AD-4 receives a new armored windshield and a reinforced landing gear. 3 180 Skyraiders were built, the last ones were withdrawn from service in Gabon in 1984.
