The story behind the legend
Once upon a time...
Amelia Earhart was an American aviator who set numerous flying records and championed the advancement of women in aviation.
Amelia Earhart made her mark in aviation history through a series of daring feats that pushed the limits of her time. In 1928, she became the first woman to cross the Atlantic, although as a passenger. This achievement, accomplished aboard the Friendship, brought her worldwide fame and inspired her to pursue a career as a pilot determined to fly on her own.
Four years later, in 1932, she repeated the Atlantic crossing — but this time solo — becoming the first woman to achieve this feat. She flew from Harbour Grace (Newfoundland) to Londonderry (Northern Ireland) in nearly 15 hours, facing strong winds, mechanical failures, and extreme weather conditions.
Ever hungry for new challenges, Earhart continued to break records. In 1935, she became the first person to fly nonstop from Hawaii to California — a flight of more than 3,800 kilometers that was especially risky, as any malfunction could have been fatal over the Pacific Ocean. She also set altitude and speed records, proving that a woman could compete with the greatest aviators of her time.
In 1937, Amelia undertook her most ambitious dream: to fly around the world aboard her Lockheed Electra. This journey, which was meant to make her a living legend, ended tragically when she disappeared over the Pacific near Howland Island. Her aircraft was never found, and she was officially declared lost at sea. Her disappearance remains one of the greatest unsolved mysteries of the 20th century.
