The story behind the legend
Once upon a time...
Established in December 1940 as the first air unit of the Oklahoma National Guard, the 125th Liaison Squadron was officially recognised at federal level in January 1941.
Over the next three and a half years, the squadron was successively attached to the 77th Observation Group and then the 76th Reconnaissance Group, operating from various locations in the United States. It finally arrived in Liverpool, England, as the 1944 D-Day landings approached.
After crossing the English Channel in August 1944 to reach France, the 125th Liaison Squadron was integrated into the 9th Air Force until Victory in Europe Day. It took part in campaigns in northern France, the Ardennes, the Rhineland and central Europe. For its courage during the Battle of the Bulge, it was awarded the Belgian Fourragère in July 1945.
During its five years of activity, the squadron operated several types of aircraft: the O-38E, O-52 and L-5, used for liaison, observation and reconnaissance missions.
