The story behind the legend
Once upon a time...
The 311th Bombardment Squadron was formed in January 1942 as a light bomber squadron of the USAAF. Quickly integrated into the 311th Bombardment Group (Dive), it participated in initial training with Vultee V-72 Vengeance aircraft before being redesignated successively as a ‘Fighter-Bomber Squadron’ and then a ‘Fighter Squadron’ according to the operational needs of the US Air Force.
After training in the United States, the squadron was deployed to India, then engaged in the India-Burma campaign and, subsequently, in operations in China. It initially flew A-36 Apaches, a dive-bombing version of the P-51 Mustang, before receiving P-51 Mustangs, which it used for ground attack, close air support, bomber escort and armed reconnaissance missions. These operations directly supported Allied ground forces engaged against Japanese troops in one of the most demanding theatres of the Second World War.
Throughout its campaigns, the 311th Bombardment Squadron contributed to Allied advances in Burma, securing lines of communication and destroying strategic enemy targets. After the end of the conflict, the squadron, then part of the 311th Fighter Group, was finally deactivated on 6 January 1946.
