The story behind the legend
Once upon a time...
The Thunderbirds are the US Air Force aerobatic team. The team was formed in June 1953 and currently flies F-16 Fighting Falcons. It is the oldest display team in the world, alongside the prestigious Patrouille de France, which was formed in the same year.
The Thunderbirds' display programme is performed by a six-aircraft formation and lasts nearly an hour! They perform in front of audiences around the world to showcase the pride, precision and professionalism of the US Air Force. Through air shows and flypasts, they aim to thrill and inspire.
The Thunderbirds were officially activated on 1 June 1953 as the 3600th Aerial Demonstration Team at Luke AFB, Arizona. Their first aircraft were F-84G Thunderjets... like a certain Patrouille de France, then they evolved to North American F-100C Super Sabres from 1956 to 1963, Republic F-105B Thunderchiefs in 1964, for only six performances, McDonnell F-4E Phantom IIs (1969-1973), Northrop T-38 Talons (1974-1982) and finally F16s since 1983.
