The story behind the legend
Once upon a time...
A French flying ace during World War I, Charles Eugène Jules Marie Nungesser was one of the three most decorated French aces, with 43 confirmed aerial victories. It was probably during the Battle of Verdun that he had his personal insignia painted on his Nieuport 17 for the first time: a skull and crossbones, surmounted by a coffin surrounded by two candlesticks, all drawn inside a black heart—quite a symbol!
He disappeared with François Coli aboard L'Oiseau Blanc during an attempt to cross the Atlantic against the prevailing winds from Paris to New York two weeks before Charles Lindbergh's crossing on May 8, 1927.
With 21 citations on his Croix de Guerre, including 19 palms and 2 vermeil stars, he is one of the most decorated soldiers in the entire French army in the 20th century.
