The story behind the legend
Once upon a time...
The Lafayette Escadrille was an iconic air unit created in 1916 during World War I. It brought together American volunteers who came to fight alongside France before the United States officially entered the conflict. These aviators, driven by a deep ideal of liberty and fraternity, were integrated into the French Air Force and operated on the Western Front. Their emblem, a Sioux head on a red background, symbolizes both their spirit of courage and their voluntary commitment.
During the war, the Lafayette Escadrille distinguished itself through its numerous combat missions and aerial victories against enemy forces. Flying Nieuport and then SPAD aircraft, it became famous for its talented pilots, such as Raoul Lufbery, Kiffin Rockwell, and Norman Prince, several of whom were killed in action. Their bravery helped strengthen Franco-American friendship and forged a legend that extended far beyond the battlefields.
After the war, the squadron was integrated into the French Air Force under the name Groupe de chasse La Fayette, thus perpetuating the memory of the American pioneers. Its legacy lives on through French and American military traditions, as well as through its motto, “N'oublions jamais” (Let us never forget), recalling the sacrifice and solidarity between the two nations. Even today, the La Fayette Squadron embodies the ideal of cooperation and courage that unites France and the United States in aviation history.
