The story behind the legend

Once upon a time...

The 14-P-1 PBY-5 Catalina was piloted by Ensign Tanner of VP-14 on the morning of December 7, 1941, with instructions to “remain on alert during this period of high tension.” A few hours before the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, Tanner spotted a Japanese midget submarine attempting to enter the harbor. The submarine was destroyed by a combined attack from Tanner and the destroyer USS Ward.
