The story behind the legend
Once upon a time...
The P-61A-10 42-5623 “SWEATIN' WALLY” piloted by Captain Walter A. STORCK is one of the few “Black Widows” to have served in the three main theaters of operation during World War II.
Initially deployed with the 427th Night Fighter Squadron at Payne Airfield in Cairo, Egypt, in August 1944, it conducted night fighter operations over the Mediterranean Sea.
Designated for assignment to Pomigliano Airfield in Italy, the squadron flew a few airfield protection and night bomber hunting missions.
It was eventually reassigned to the 10th Air Force and shipped to India on the CBI front in late 1944.
