The story behind the legend
Once upon a time...
The Corsair (Vought F4U Corsair) is an iconic American fighter-bomber from the Second World War, recognizable by its “W”-shaped wings (inverted gull wings) and its long engine cowling. Designed for the U.S. Navy, it was conceived from the start to be fast, sturdy, and capable of operating from aircraft carriers. Its Pratt & Whitney R-2800 radial engine produced over 2,000 horsepower, making it one of the most powerful fighters of its time.
Its performance was impressive: it exceeded 650 km/h (about 400 mph) at top speed, climbed quickly to altitude, and had excellent range for escort or ground-attack missions. It was generally armed with six 12.7 mm Browning machine guns (.50 cal), or cannons depending on the variant, and could carry bombs and rockets under the wings, which made it a versatile aircraft, effective both in air combat and in close air support for ground troops.
In service, the Corsair distinguished itself mainly in the Pacific, where it was used by the U.S. Navy, the U.S. Marine Corps, and several Allied forces (notably the Royal Navy). It earned a formidable reputation in dogfights against Japanese fighters and continued its career after 1945, particularly during the Korean War. Its toughness, firepower, and unique silhouette turned it into a true legend of military aviation, still very present today at airshows and in historic aircraft collections.
