The story behind the legend
Once upon a time...
The first Stearman was built in 1933 by the Stearman Aircraft Company. In 1934, the US Army Air Corps decided to acquire a new basic training aircraft. The Stearman met the USAAC's search criteria, and 26 were immediately ordered. The US Navy purchased 61 at the same time. The Stearman was a very popular aircraft in the United States at that time, with 3,510 units produced in 1940 alone! Different versions were developed, with different engines, for instrument flying, for agricultural spraying, etc. In total, 3,200 aircraft were built for the USAAC and 4,575 for the US Navy. They were mainly used for basic military pilot training. At the end of the Second World War, a large number of Stearmans were sold around the world.
The Stearman we used to test and develop this jacket was built in 1940. It spent its entire career with the US Air Force as a PT-18 (with a different engine). In 1994, it was acquired by an American owner who changed its engine and turned it into a PT-17. In 2012, Aero Vintage Academy acquired it with the aim of offering retro aircraft pilot training to the general public.
